Welcome to the team page for Bournemouth Rugby's U8's - Developing great players who love to play rugby. We are really proud of our inclusive team spirit and love to see the players progress, both in rugby and personally We follow the RFU principles so that as children get older they move away from non-contact tag rugby and into the contact game, so that by the time they finish at under 12's they are ready to progress to a full size pitch and 15 a side games. Mini rugby is a mixture of exercise, skills, team work and personal development to bring out the best in children in an enjoyable environment.
We have a great mix of experienced and parent coaches in the team including;
Daniel (Drill sergeant) Connolly - An ex-international player, representing Wales in the Hong Kong 7's and domestic teams including London Welsh, Wasps, Richmond, Bridgend and Pontypool. A level 2 coach with experience coaching Bournemouth 1st XV, Michael House 3rd XV and Canberra Grammer school u12's.
Andy (Man mountain) Curtis - has 3 sons playing in the mini section at Bournemouth RFC, and combines coaching U8's with his role as Head of Medical services for senior players. Prior to being an ESP physio, running his own clinic, Andy was a full time player at Bristol Shogun. Andy has a wealth of experience coaching at various schools including Bryanston school's elite pathway, as well as working with Bath DPP u13 and u14 squads. Andy is a RFU level 3 Immediate Care Practioner and RFU level 2 coach (completing November 2017).
Will (OBE) Brooks - has 1 son playing in the minis. He's an Ex 1st team lock, when the team reached national 2. Has never had many letters after his name, a few choice words maybe. A level 1 coach, with ambitions to complete level 2 by the end of the season.
All coaches are required to completed Rugby Ready CPD, Safeguarding CPD and First Aid courses and all are DBS checked. The RFU Continual Professional Development of our coaches is the firm basis on which we have built our successful minis team. As a group we are committed to continuously improving our approach to coaching, are very open to feedback and would encourage active participation from parents and carers. Come speak to us!
Our training sessions are a mixture of some pre-planned games and drills looking to develop the key skills, and some games where we would look for the players to put these skills into practice. We recognise the need to keep training light and enjoyable, so that the kids learn without realising it, but equally want to ensure good discipline and respect so all the players can maximise the benefits of playing. At Under 8 (School Year 3) children play in a maximum of 6 a-side teams taking tags rather than tackling. There is a focus on ball handling, teamwork and spacial awareness on the field. In addition to the home training sessions, we have a busy fixtures diary receiving travelling teams, visiting local clubs and travelling to rugby festivals.

Developing RFU Core Values of Teamwork, Respect,
Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship
We provide tag, touch and contact (Year 4 upwards optional) rugby based games around the Dorset area for both girls and boys aged 4 to 15 years in a healthy and nurturing environment.
Our lessons are designed with the objective to develop core rugby skills of handling, kicking, tackling/tagging/touch and running with the balls. In addition we develop hand eye co-ordination, spatial awareness and effective decision making and it also improves overall fitness. Rippa Rugby can be played indoors and out on different surfaces and is an all year round sport.
The rules are simple in that a team attempts to score tries at one end of the pitch whilst the other team defends by ripping the Tags off the attackers, thus forcing them to pass and proceed with their attack.
Contact sessions are introduced for year 4 upwards (Optional) teaching the children how to tackle and fall correctly and bringing these safe techniques in to game related play.
